He’s got a shot. Justin Bieber is up against some tough competition at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards but his moody ‘U-Smile’ video is pretty darn good.

The nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards were announced on July 21, 2011 and Justin Bieber’s U-Smile, a video released in Sept. of last year, has been nominated for Best Male Video. The show takes place earlier than it has in the recent past, on Sunday, August 28 at 6 PDT/9 EST and for the second straight year will be at the Nokia Theatre in L.A.

The 17-year-old Bieber was up for one MTV Video Music Awards last year as well, Best New Artist, which he won. This time he’s got some pretty awesome company in his category, all established artists with big followings. Bruno Mars is up for his video of Grenade; the energetic Cee Lo Green is up for F*** You; the superstar Eminem is up for Love the Way You Lie, which features Rihanna; and the unpredictable Kanye West is up for All of the Lights, also featuring Rihanna, along with Kid Cudi.

U-Smile Video Directed by Colin Tilley

The U-Smile video is a moody and more mature work than the videos gone before it and to date has received over 44,000,000 hits on Youtube. It’s directed by the 23-year-old Colin Tilley, who also directed the 2009 Bieber video of Never Let You Go. It starts off in black and white as 5 girls, fans, approach Bieber as he comes out of a theatre. As they take photos with him the director cleverly switches to color and it becomes evident Bieber likes one of his fans.

After the girls leave, with the one he likes promising to return, Bieber is at the piano on this darkened theatre stage playing the opening of U Smile, an arresting, darkly lit shot. He plays and the fan arrives and the actress does a great job of not simply being an adoring fan but an equal. The rest of the video alternates between color and black and white and the piano, the theatre seats and a stairwell in the alley outside. The constant is the playful couple falling in love.

Bieber Seeks 2nd MTV Video Music Award

The video doesn’t have the raw energy some of the other nominations have but it has a unique feel and a mood that gives it an edge they don’t have. The favorite to win? Likely Eminem and Kanye West – it pays to feature Rihanna, no? – but it would not be a surprise if Bieber were to win an MTV Video Music Award for the second straight year.

In addition to his win at last year’s MTV VMA’s Bieber has won two MTV Europe Awards, both in 2010,. Further, at the recent 2011 MTV Movie Awards he won the ‘Best Jaw Dropping Moment’ for a scene from his biopic Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
